New Camera!

I finally invested in a new camera - the Olympus E-PL3. I love it because it's definitely a step up from a standard point and shoot, but it's also the perfect size to travel with. I experimented with it over the weekend.

Joey is getting old - he wouldn't even lift his head up for a photo.

 Mom at a graduation party.

Mom likes trousers too (see below) - here she is, wearing Alberta Ferretti.

Like mother, like daughter - wearing striped Theory trousers.

Don't Drop Trou

I've always been a simple jean or leggings girl, never really branching out when it comes to pants. But I've made a discovery....trousers, and I'm now in love.

I have recently realized that trousers, especially with women in their early 20s, are unfortunately overlooked (by myself included for a long time!). They are incredibly versatile, being both wearable for work and play, fun and serious.

I like the idea of crazy patterns and interesting designs when it comes to trousers. It steers them away from their typical stereotype of being boring office wear, and veers them onto the path of being something ornamental and decorative.

Plus, they are incredibly comfortable, much softer and more free flowing than leg-constricting jeans.
These pieces below are great for summer with flower and paisley prints done in bright colors and cotton fabrics. During the fall and winter, I love wool, plaid trousers.

MK&A...Definitely not overrated

I know everyone says this, but I really do love Mary Kate and Ashley's hippie-dippie/chic style (the messy hair, the oversized clothes, the big shoes and accessories, etc). I'm only a few inches shorter than them and always wear loose shirts and dresses (I also wish I was a hippie sometimes), so it's fun for me to see what they are wearing, and how they pull it off. I wish The Row was a tad less expensive though...

They also have great hair colors, and I always turn to them for inspiration when I want to dye mine. I love Mary Kate's burnt orange/brown color.

Flower Power

Summer has been a bit non-existent lately here in Portland (but even as I say that, I can see some blue skies!). As cliche as it may sound, I believe flowers are a sure-fire way to brighten up anything. I think it is incredibly important to always keep them in the home, whether it's just a few stems or an entire bouquet (Although I usually tend to think less-is-more when it comes to arrangements). When it comes time for me to own my own apartment, I always want to keep flowers in my bedroom, the kitchen, and the bathroom. My favorite place to go for flowers in Portland is Sammy's.

People usually like putting flowers in simple glass vases, but I find that a bit boring. I like something funkier, like antique vases with intricate patterns from ancient China, Victorian England and French Renaissance.

Sun Hats

I recently read an article in the NYT Magazine about the misconception that Pinterest is a place where women build imaginery lives and long to be people they are not. The idea of a "mood board" is to bring us pleasure and be able to share that joy with others.

This post represents a combination of these two ideas. On the one hand, I wish I could pull off a sun hat like these beautiful, tall women. Every time I wander into the store Bonnet in Portland, I long for one of those hats. I just know, however, that it will look silly on my small frame. And yet, on the other hand, looking at these hats gives me a brief, fleeting happiness. The photos remind me of summer, sun and relaxing. They remind me of classy women such as Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffanys (a woman I wish I could mimick, but never will).

I believe Pinterest, magazines, and all things fashion, reveal both a yearning for what one does not possess, and a way to momentarily enjoy the aesthetics of beauty.

These photos make me feel serene, and I want to share that feeling with others.

Slanted Ceilings and Alcove Beds

Senior year of college, my friends and I lived off campus. Being the smallest (and apparently needing the least amount of space), I roomed on the third floor in what resembled an attic, with a deep slanted ceiling and a mysterious crawl space. At first, I hated the idea of being "shafted" up there, but I soon grew to love it. The room was very cozy and I felt snuggly in my bed while watching TV beneath the low hanging ceiling. It was especially great in the cold winter months; while my friends had drafty, open rooms, I was content and warm in my little nook.

I love the idea of turning a dusty, neglected attic into something innovative - a bathroom, guest-room, kids' play space, or family room.

Rooms can either be more antique....

 ....or modern-chic.

To Friendship

I spent last night with some of my best friends from high school. It was a rare time. Now that we have all gone to college in different cities, it is uncommon for us to be together at once. I loved every moment with them.

Today as I opened up Twitter, I saw the hashtag #theatershooting and news about Colorado dominating my feed. The headlines made my heart sink. I didn't even want to open them. But of course I did and what I read made me sick and incredibly sad. One article from the New York Times quotes a man who was seeing the movie in an adjacent theater. His description of chaos, confusion and watching a policeman walking out with a dead little girl in his arms brought tears to my eyes.

One of my friends from college has a fear of guns and getting shot. I always thought it was irrational and made fun of her for it. Hearing news like the Colorado shootings however, makes me realize that even the most unexpected can happen. She isn't completely off her cracker for thinking such thoughts. These people in Aurora were simply seeing a movie, something people do all the time. It's a time to enjoy being with friends and family.

Last night, my friends and I were at a concert - a public place, crowded with strangers coming together to enjoy a night of entertainment and companionship - it is much like going to the movies. I can't even think about that being us, just some girlfriends out to have a good time. Every life is fragile and it shouldn't take a tragedy such as this to remember that.

We are celebrating Devon's 22nd birthday tonight and I have been anticipating 7:00 all day.  I cannot believe we have stayed so close, even after college and I feel so lucky to still have them in my life. The shootings remind me that every second I spend with them is precious, that I cannot imagine a life without the people I love.

Lives were lost today, but I am still very excited and grateful to celebrate another life and another year with the most amazing people I have known. Happy Birthday Devon!

Tonight...

I am very excited to unleash my inner rocker tonight with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, playing at the Oregon Zoo. My friend introduced their music to me a few weeks ago and I have been hooked every since. In honor of tonight, here are some rocker-chic-meets-cowgirl styles ~
